Mum and Daughter team up for Pink Fig Markets
SIAN Downey was just 10-years-old when her mum, Sharon Delima, first taught her to sew.
Now the mother and daughter pair have teamed up to run a boutique stall, Sewing with Sian, at the Pink Fig Mother's Day Markets on Sunday.
"My mum passed the love of craft on to me, because she could put her hands to just about anything - from painting to sewing and more," Ms Delima said.
"I'm so proud to now have wonderful girls who are also very creative."
And it looks like there will soon be a fourth generation of sewers and crafters in the family, with Ms Downey expecting a new baby girl later this year.
"I'm so thankful for my Mum. She's always encouraged me and she's going to be a great help at the markets," she said.
Ms Downey attended last year's Pink Fig Mother's Day Markets and said she was looking forward to another great day.
"I had a wonderful time and it really inspired me," she said. "It turned out to be one of the best markets I've attended," she said.
The Pink Fig Mother's Day Markets will be held on the leafy grounds of Darling Downs Christian School, Glenvale on Sunday, from 12-5pm, and promise something for everyone.
"We have a great collection of more than 40 high-quality stall holders in our white marquee and grounds this year, all offering something beautiful and unique for you to purchase for mum in time for Mother's Day," market coordinator Elissa Dowling said.
"We will also have live music and gourmet food vans gathered under our huge fig tree - a great place for a coffee and picnic with your family or a group of friends."
Local performers include Ruby Slippers, Matthew Joseph and Justin Elbert, while wood-fired pizza, coffee and iced-tea stalls, as well as healthy, locally-made delicacies will be on offer.
There will also be plenty of activities for the kids, with face painting, sand art, free pot-a-plant and vintage games.
"We hope to create something people want to return to year after year, as well as featuring both the emerging and established bespoke industries within our region," Ms Dowling said.
The markets are a major fundraiser for Darling Downs Christian School, 451 McDougall Street. For more information, contact the school on 4659 1111 or follow their event on Facebook.
